Understanding Art Law: A Workshop Series for Artists

Presented by Us Gallery in partnership with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), SAIC Student Government, and Art Law from Artist Magazine

This month, we’re launching a series of lectures and workshops designed to equip emerging artists with essential legal knowledge for navigating the art world.

From copyright and trademark to freedom of expression under the First Amendment, we’ll explore how the law intersects with artistic practice. This program is tailored to help artists become familiar with legal terms, understand their rights, and prepare for the challenges they may face after school.

In addition to foundational legal topics, we’ll also address timely issues in art and law—such as NFTs, digital ownership, and the evolving landscape of intellectual property.

First Session:
📅 This Wednesday
🕓 4:45–5:45 PM CT
📍 Sharp Room 327 & via Zoom (link in bio)

Topics include:

  • Why artists need to understand the law

  • How art is regulated (general law, cultural property law, self-regulation)

  • What is copyright? How to register and retain rights over your work

  • Intellectual property: Protecting your designs and fine art

  • Legal considerations in the age of digital art and NFTs

Join us to empower your practice with the legal tools to thrive creatively and professionally.
